See La Scala Ballet’s Notre-Dame de Paris on screen in Cape Town
As part of The Fugard Theatre’s World Opera and Ballet Season, they have one screening of La Scala Ballet’s colourful production of Notre-Dame de Paris – at 4pm on Sunday 24 March.
Here’s the blurb:
Notre-Dame de Paris, inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, with music by Maurice Jarre, sets by René Allio and the renowned costumes of Yves Saint-Laurent, returns to La Scala after more than ten years since its last performances.
Once again it will be celebrating choreographer Roland Petit and the triumph of his vision of performance as a total creation: dance, sets, costumes, music, theatricality… with two of the international ballet world’s brightest stars: Roberto Bolle and Natalia Osipova.
This ballet was filmed live at Milan’s Teatro alla Scalla on February 14, 2013. Here are two reviews:
“With her corset-like tunics and sensual footwork, Petit’s Esmeralda is a cousin of his landmark Carmen, and there is no better enfant terrible to play her today than Natalia Osipova.” – Laura Capelle, The Financial Times
“Osipova’s legs are extraordinary for the ballet stage: lightning-fast and explosive in their effects, not least the gravity-defying jumps she is famous for. Her vividly realistic despair in Act Two is a reminder of the larger-than-life acting she has honed over the years.” The Financial Times
